The Amish and Mennonites have traditionally lived in
agragarian communitites. Pennsylvania is know world-wide
for its rich soil and tidy farms.
However, in just the past 25 years, with the continuing
population growth, farmland in PA became less available.
Many farmers in the plain community had to look for other
opportunities to earn a livlihood.
With their practical hands-on work ethic, wood craftsmanship
became a natural alternative to farming for many of the
Amish. A few farmers experimented with the construction
of little storage barns, building them in their farm shops
over the slack winter months and selling them to their
neighbors. Initially, only red paint was used, so these
sheds were truly
"little red barns".
The concept of backyard storage became increasingly popular.
Today, shed manufacturing has become an important occupation
in Pennsylvania's rural communitites. Tens of thousand
of little barns are constructed every year and shipped
all over the country.
